In Zurich nothing is impossible, not even a swim in the Limmat in winter. Every year, courageous swimmers take the plunge into the icy water to take part in the “Samichlaus” (Santa Claus) swimming race.

Sports
There are also plenty of opportunities for winter sports such as skiing and sledging.
Sledging on the Üetliberg
The sledge run on Zurich’s own mountain is popular with guests and locals alike. At the first snowfall, people get their sledges out of the basement and race down the 3.1 km long sledge run from Uetliberg down to Triemli. Join in the sledging mania.
Dolder Ice Complex
The atmosphere at the Dolder Ice Complex is unique: surrounded by wooded countryside, this 6,000 m² ice rink - the biggest in Switzerland - is a quiet and relaxing place. With other leisure facilities such as a swimming pool (with wave machine) and crazy golf close by, the Dolder ice rink is a popular meeting place for sports fans of all ages and an attractive day trip destination for anyone in the Zurich region.
Zurich’s Santa Claus Swimming Race
Enthusiastic winter swimmers cannot resist taking on the 111-meter long stretch between pier 7 and the jetty of the Stadthausquai ladies’ lido. As well as a warm meal at the end, the winner earns a finisher’s certificate and free entry to Zurich’s indoor swimming pools. The average temperature in the past was 6 °C.
Zurich’s New Year’s Eve Run
Organizers are once again expecting some 16,000 runners for this year's tradition-steeped race through Zurich's old town and the Bahnhofstrasse. The New Year's Eve Run provides a unique opportunity to run through the brightly decorated and, for once, car-free city center. There are various distances to choose from, ranging from 1.4 to 9.8 km.
Mythen Skiing Region
The Hoch-Ybrig, Mythen and Sattel region is a favorite winter family skiing area with guaranteed snow. Thirty lifts and 100 km of downhill runs provide skiers and snowboarders with all the variety they want.
